The most seminal book on presenting Brazilian architecture to the world, it followed an exhibition in MoMa in 1943, by the architect Philip Goodwin. In a two-month trip to Brazil, Philip Goodwin and the photographer Kidder Smith collected 650 black and white photographs, 250 Kodachromes, 200 archival images, original drawings by Niemeyer. The book features a careful edition and printing of technical drawings and photographs using rotogravure. Not only the works featured there are surprisingly brilliant, but also the scope of this edition, beginning with baroque and popular architecture intermingled with latest achievement at the time, is a statement. Modern architecture was now, and by right, also tropical, popular, historical, daring. It overpassed its colonial past, as completely self-standing in front of flashiest American or European productions.

Still today, Brazilian architecture and all its power and mastery, is not completely reachable. Em dois meses de viagem ao Brasil, Philip Goodwin e o fotógrafo Kidder Smith recolheram 650 fotografias a preto e branco, 250 Kodachromes, 200 imagens de arquivo, desenhos originais de Niemeyer. O livro é montado sobre uma cuidadosa edição e rigor técnico de desenhos e fotografias impressos em rotogravura. Não só as obras ali apresentadas são surpreendentemente brilhantes, como também o alcance escolhido para montar a edição, intercalando arquitectura barroca e popular com as mais recentes conquistas da época é surpreendente e revelador. A arquitectura moderna passava a ser agora, também tropical, popular, histórica, ousada. When at architecture school, Álvaro Siza’s teacher looked at his drawings and said: “It’s clear how little you know about architecture. Why don’t you go out and buy some magazines?” In a time when it was hard to find them in Portugal, Siza bought some issues of Architecture d’Aujourd’hui and this on Aino and Alvar Aalto, was one of his first copies, of most decisive importance.

It’s easy to imagine the impact of seeing this work by a Finnish architect, who just in the first lines is described as working in a context where primeval and medieval world as still alive and intermingle with modern civilization. How this tension would reverberate in a young student from Portugal, of equal context of periphery and artisanship can only be evaluated in his own work. Works featuring this magazine, such as the Viipuri Library, are a clear point of departure of many Siza’s works.

In the middle of the magazine, a page places a part of Aalto’s furniture along with a photo of two undulated tree branches. The title – “la Recherche d’un Forme” – is perhaps one of the most intense allusions on the importance of a way of seeing, a particular attention towards reality, towards the evident, in order to archive new forms, in banality, in continuity, in steady observation as an exercise for life.

Nos primeiros anos da escola de arquitectura, o professor de Álvaro Siza olhou os seus desenhos e comentou: “É bastante claro você não sabe muito sobre arquitectura. Porque é que não compra algumas revistas?” Nunca altura em que eram raras as publicações internacionais de Arquitectura a circular em Portugal, Siza conseguiu alguns exemplares da Architecture d’Aujourd’hui, de entre eles um número sobre o trabalho de Aino e Alvar Aalto que virá a ter uma importância decisiva. “A sorte que eu tive!”, diz Siza.

É fácil imaginar o impacto da obra de um arquitecto finlandês como Aalto, que logo nas primeiras linhas é descrito como trabalhando num contexto onde o mundo primitivo e medieval ainda estão bastante vivos e se misturam com a civilização moderna. O impacto que esta tensão teria sobre um jovem estudante em Portugal, de igual contexto periférico e artesanal, só pode ser bem avaliado no seu trabalho futuro. Muitos dos projectos apresentados nesta revista, como a Biblioteca Viipuri, são pontos de partida claros nas obras que Siza desenhará décadas depois.

A meio da revista, uma página coloca lado a lado uma peça de mobiliário desenhada por Aalto e uma imagem de dois ramos de árvores contorcidos. O título – “La Recherche d’un Forme” – é talvez uma das alusões mais intensas à importância da construção de um modo de ver, de uma atenção particular à realidade, de procurar saber ver no que é banal, na evidência, formas novas de criação.

This one of Álvaro Siza’s first magazines on architecture when student, curiously an issue edited by the “young American architect” Paul Rudolph, later one of the most decisive American architects in the 20^th century.
Entangled between a sterile historicism and the arrival of modern architects to America, this issue strives for depicting a clear vision of modern architecture. Here, it means to reset what architects’ training should be. From W. Gropius’ Harvard to the “Bauhaus of Chicago”, to “Black Mountain College”, the significance of a plan of studies for Architecture and Design was non less than the way of ensuring social recognition on the importance of Architecture in everyday live, and assuming a strategic role in the postwar crisis.
More or less a recurrent discussion, the very initial statement by the director of this magazine, André Bloc, would be of crucial importance nowadays – “it is a notable fact, that some of the architecture masters, could materialize their teachings with the one and only valid demonstration: building.”

Siza narrates a small episode that stands the importance of this issue: in one of his recent travels to Shanghai, he immediately recognized University of Hua-Tung, even if it was his first time there. The project of the campus is in this magazine. Drawings are brilliant in converging the oriental imaginary (pine trees, water, the use of ink in the paper, shadows) with the modern ideary for a university campus.

Esta é uma das primeiras revistas de arquitectura de Álvaro Siza, ainda enquanto estudante, curiosamente um número editado pelo também “jovem arquitecto” americano Paul Rudolph, mais tarde um dos mais decisivos arquitectos americanos do século XX.
Entre um historicismo estéril e a chegada dos mestres modernos aos Estados Unidos, esta edição busca captar uma ideia clara de Arquitectura Moderna. E isso aqui, significou focar o que deveria ser a formação de um arquitecto moderno. Da Harvard de W. Gropius, à “Bauhaus de Chicago”, ao Black Mountain College, o peso atribuído a um plano de estudos de Arquitectura era crucial. Nele jogava-se não menos do que o próprio reconhecimento social da importância da Arquitectura no dia-a-dia, e a possibilidade de puxar a si um papel estratégico na saída da crise do pós-guerra.
A discussão do plano de estudos de um arquitecto, sempre um tema mais ou menos recorrente, deveria hoje considerar a afirmação crucial do director desta revista, André Bloc, com a qual se abre o tema – “é um facto notável, que alguns dos mestres de arquitectura, tenham podido materializar os seus ensinamentos através de uma e única demonstração válida: obra construída”.

Siza narra um pequeno episódio que destaca o impacto deste número da revista: numa das suas recentes viagens a Xangai, reconheceu imediatamente a Universidade de Hua-Tung, ainda que nunca lá antes tivesse estado. O projecto do campus encontra-se nesta revista. Os desenhos são bastante expressivos da fusão do imaginário oriental (os pinheiros, a água, o uso de tinta no papel, as sombras) com o ideário moderno, sob o tema do campus universitário.

This is, perhaps, the most influent book by Vittorio Gregotti (1927-2020), Italian architect, decisive to the coming paths of contemporary architecture, originally published in 1966. Unusually clear and aware of philosophical depth of thought in Architecture, this small book dares to start with the question: “What kind of ‘thing’ is Architecture made of?”. Now as then often, if not ever, Architecture seams to block in crossroads where its fundaments have to be checked, discussed, seen in perspective. This book is one referential contribution to that. Vittorio Gregotti was also credited to be an excellent critic, with keen eye for significant peripheral practices, and one of the first to publish works by Álvaro Siza, beginning a season of renewed interest in Portuguese architecture coinciding with the end of the dictatorship in Portugal.

Originalmente publicado em 1966, este livro foi decisivo nos caminhos seguintes tomados pela arquitectura contemporânea. Extraordinariamente claro e consciente da dimensão filosófica do pensamento em Arquitectura, este pequeno livro ousa começar com a pergunta: “De que tipo de ‘coisa’ é feita a Arquitectura?”. Agora, como muitas vezes, senão mesmo sempre, a Arquitectura parece bloquear num impasse onde os seus fundamentos pedem verificação, discussão, confronto. Este livro é uma contribuição essencial a esse exercício. Ever since Álvaro Siza first discovered the work of Cavafy in Jorge de Sena’s anthology, it has remained an influence. Constantinos Cavafy (1863-1933), Greek poet, one of the key figures in western Poetry. Commonly known as the author of “Ithaca” (1911), a poem inspired by the return of Homero to his home island, as depicted in “Odyssey”. Cavafy drew themes from personal experience as from Helleno-romaic antiquity and the Byzantine era in poems of celebrated modernity. Perhaps a reminder that classic tradition is not a thing from the past, nor a ruin.

Often Siza’s work is described as being more Greek than Roman, in allusion to his attention to the site, often deriving his designs from the specificity of it. Also often, Siza recalls that the site is in our mind, maybe just as much as Ithaca was in Homero’s.

Desde que Álvaro Siza descobriu, pela primeira vez, a obra de Cavafy na antologia de Jorge de Sena, que este permanece como leitura fundamental. Constantinos Cavafy (1863-1933), poeta grego, uma das figuras-chave da poesia ocidental moderna. Conhecido como o autor de “Ítaca” (1911), um poema inspirado no retorno de Homero à sua ilha natal, como retractado na “Odisseia”. Cavafy extraiu temas da sua experiência pessoal, como da antiguidade helénica ou da era bizantina em poemas de célebre modernidade. Talvez uma nota de que a tradição clássica não é uma coisa do passado, nem uma ruína.

Muitas vezes o trabalho de Siza é descrito como sendo mais grego do que romano, em alusão à sua atenção ao sítio, fazendo nascer os seus projectos do espírito do lugar. Também com frequência, Siza lembra que o lugar está em nossa cabeça, talvez tanto quanto Ítaca estava na de Homero.

Written in 1926, Moravagine is the is the most well-known novel by Blaise Cendrars. A complex work, Moravagine is an “epic of destruction in which one senses Goya, Bosch, Dante”. It’s a strange story of a man who destroys, shatters and pulverizes everything that binds, oppresses the man of our time. In the book only madness, insurrection, gratuitous crime, revolution, evasion in the dream, conflict between freedom and need, sexuality, violence, absurdity of the world. The book was written during World War I at a time when as the narrator describes, “the whole world was doing a Moravagine”.

Blaise Cendrars (1887-1961), novelist and poet, oddly having born the same place and year of Le Corbusier, was an early exponent of modernism. His name is not as much familiar as one might suppose of someone being painted by Leger, Modigliani, and Chagall, who helped to “discover” Jazz, Negro art, Surrealism, Anarchism, and Henry Miller, who writes the preface of this book.

Cendrars boldly praised Eiffel Tower, loved Brazilian Baroque, was the so-called first foreign to visit the ‘favelas’ of Rio, and even encouraged Le Corbusier to design a new capital of Brazil.

This book recollects most of his main writings where, in the words of Henry Miller, “Everything is written in blood, but a blood that is saturated with starlight.”
